All about our online baby sleep classes

Do I need to get help with my baby’s sleep?

No doubt you’ll have dealt with a well-meaning family member or friend asking, “So, how’s she sleeping?”

Or, even worse: “Is he a good sleeper?”

Most new parents resign themselves to getting less sleep when their baby arrives. But sometimes it all gets a bit much and getting through the day can feel impossible.

All babies are different. And, just like all of us adults have different needs and preferences, your baby will probably sleep differently from your friend’s baby, from how you slept, and from how your Mother-in-Law says your husband slept!

Also, things change pretty quickly with babies. What your baby needs when they’re 4 weeks old is very different to what they need when they’re 4 months old. It can be hard to stay on top of it all. And when you’re exhausted it will all feel even harder!

You can find an overview of a baby’s sleep needs at different ages here. But basically, the older a baby is, the longer they can be awake for between sleeps, and the longer they can sleep for before they need a feed.

That’s pretty easy to type, but it’s harder to get your head around when you’re sleep-deprived and trying to remember whether you sterilized the bottles before you went to bed.

So sure, it might just be a phase.

But wouldn’t you rather find out if you can help get your baby more rest?

How will your online baby sleep class help me?

What is a baby sleep class online

I’m a trained Maternity Nanny and Baby Care Specialist, and I work in parents’ homes in the first few months of a baby’s life, helping ease the transition for everyone. I support parents by letting them sleep, troubleshooting bedtime routines, providing a crash course in babycare, and being an experienced listening ear when problems crop up.

This might surprise you, but I don’t actually advocate sleep training. I follow the approach advocated by Elizabeth Pantley, who wrote “The No-Cry Sleep Solution.” This involves using a method called Gradual Withdrawal where you gently get your baby used to going to sleep without you.

I work with you to discover a routine that makes sense for everyone in your family. We don’t try to fit a tiny baby into an adult routine, but we acknowledge that your life has a structure and there needs to be some give on both sides. (You can find some of my tips on routines and newborns here.)

I set up Ballantyne Baby Consultancy because not everyone can afford 24-hour support with a newborn. And not everyone can afford for me to come to their home in-person and help them through difficult sleep situations. (And some of you live too far away from me in sunny Sydney!) I want to help as many families as possible access a Baby Care Specialist. That’s why I’ve created 4 ways that I can support you through the magic of the internet.

FAQs: Your burning baby sleep questions answered!

tips for getting baby to sleep

At what age should I start sleep training my baby?

There are lots of baby sleep classes online that promise the world, and say that you can start sleep training the very day you get home from the hospital. This is not my approach.

While I don’t advocate sleep training, it is possible to start introducing sleep skills to your baby. The best way to start this process is to establish a consistent bedtime routine. You can do this from your very first day as a parent by having a bedtime story in a darker room, and maybe singing a calming song. These both signify that nighttime is different to the day, something that also helps babies get used to life on the outside.

How do I teach my baby to fall asleep on his own?

My favourite way of working with a baby to fall asleep by themselves uses gradual withdrawal:

  1. Have a consistent bedtime routine
  2. Put your baby in their bed when they are drowsy, but awake
  3. Sit beside the bed without engaging
  4. If they become upset, pat or stroke them
  5. Each night move further away from their bed
  6. Repeat until you’re outside the room

This strategy lets you be a comforting presence while your baby adjusts to a new reality. And don’t forget the white noise, and a dark room to promote the ideal sleep environment for your baby to wake up rested and happy!

If you come across specific problems trying to instigate this method, then you would benefit from my Express Support Call to troubleshoot your bedtimes.

Is sleep training bad for babies?

It’s not so much about good and bad, as people have different opinions. I just think our expectations need to be more realistic. In the hazy days of new parenthood, the promise of some sort of structure can feel incredibly appealing. The bad news is, your newborn baby hasn’t read any of the books. You can’t get any structure out of a newborn. The only area where I would suggest sticking to a strong routine is when it comes to feeding.

My support packages will help you work out your baby’s individual sleep needs and how you can gently fit them into your family routine.

What should I consider before I start sorting out my baby’s sleep?

Every family is different, and before you start to make decisions about bedtime routines and plans, you need to think about what will work for you. Having an initial chat with me over the phone can help you feel more confident about the ‘routine’ that will suit your household. During our chat I’ll ask you about your family’s day-to-day life, preferences and needs, and from there I can help you work out how best to fit this together with your new baby.

Where to go for help with your baby’s sleep

I love helping families to feel more confident in the first few months of their journey as parents. Parenting a newborn is tough, and it can be lonely.

Help from a real person, not Google, on the other end of a text or a video call can give you back your confidence, and make you feel more comfortable with your decisions. Book a call and let me give you back your parenting mojo!
